Life Events

Define dated milestones — retirement, a home purchase, a sabbatical, kids off to college — that your incomes and expenses can be pinned to. Change the date once, and everything anchored to it moves with it.

Events and time ranges

An event is a single point in time (month + year). A time rangeis a period spanning a start event and an end event — useful for things like "kids at home" or a sabbatical year. Create either with "Add Event"; the "Make this a time range" toggle turns a single date into a period.

Attaching cash flows

Select any event or time range to open its "Associated Cash Flows" panel, where you can add incomes and expenses tied to it. A time-range expense (say, tuition) starts and stops with the range automatically. You can also anchor any income or expense to an event from its own edit form on the Income and Expenses pages.

Good to know

  • Each person's Retirement event is created automatically from their Retirement Age on the People page — edit it there, not here.
  • The right-hand panel on this page shows a timeline of your events rather than the usual net worth chart.
  • An end date must come after the start date; the form checks this for you.
